The Jurys Inn Quick Guide To Cork

A trip to Cork, Ireland’s largest southern city, always has its ups and downs – and both are good! Cork accents more than any other in Ireland rise and fall with an unmistakable lilt. The city has been a settlement since the seventh century and has always attracted attention from visitors. Granted, early Viking tourists weren’t quite as friendly as today’s sightseers, but these days the natives are proud to show off their pretty city. Secretly they’re convinced that it’s Ireland’s real capital, and they’ve converted more than a few tourists to their way of thinking. It’s also a perfect springboard for exploring the world famous Blarney, picturesque West Cork and beyond.

Merchant city, university town, technological and industrial centre, sporting stronghold, Rebel county… Cork has many faces to share with you. Bring good walking shoes, because historic sights are many and varied along the rise and fall of the city’s hills. From the grand old merchants’ houses to the Tuscan pillars of City Hall, from Shandon Church with its famous bells to the sights and smells of the English Market, the sweep of the town along the river Lee is quite a panorama.

Cork locals have an unrivalled sense of humour and are well capable of enjoying a laugh at their own expense (but only because they know that they’re the best at most things!) Don’t expect to be handed a pint of Guinness if you ask for a stout. The Black Stuff in Cork could be Murphy’s or Beamish, two local brews that they’re intensely proud of. And while science hasn’t categorically proven it yet, the popular belief is that Corkonians can talk for longer on any given subject than any other Irish people. A visit is the only real way to test the theory.
